Frequently asked questions

Q: What is a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study?

A: A Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study is a process followed by the Florida Department of Transportation to evaluate social, economic and environmental impacts associated with a planned transportation improvement project. See additional information of this process in What is a PD&E Study”.

Q: What is the purpose of this study?

A: The purpose of this study is to provide additional capacity to meet existing and future traffic needs and improve safety along this segment of the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike while minimizing potential impacts to the surrounding communities.

Q: What types of improvements are being considered?

A: This PD&E study involves evaluation of potential alternatives to widen the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike mainline and provide operational improvements at five interchanges located at Northwest 12th Street, Northwest 41st Street, Northwest 106th Street, US 27 (Okeechobee Road) and Northwest 57th Avenue. The improvements to be recommended will be based on engineering and environmental analyses that are currently underway. The public will have opportunities to review alternative concepts at the Public Information Meeting, Public Hearing and on this website (as the drawings / documents become available). Check our Public Meeting page frequently for dates of upcoming meetings.

Q: What about the I-75 Interchange?

A: Various interchange options are being considered to provide improved access between the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike and I-75. These modifications are currently being studied as part of the I-75 PD&E Study by the Florida Department of Transportation District VI and not included as part of this Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike PD&E Study. This Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike PD&E Study will however coordinate with the I-75 Study team and tie into any proposed improvements at this interchange. To learn more about the I-75 PD&E Study visit www.i-75vision.com

Q: Will I need a SunPass to use the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike?

A: The Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is actively implementing an All Electronic Toll (AET) collection system along the entire Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike corridor. AET involves toll collection at highway speeds solely by overhead gantries using SunPass and Video Tolling technology.  This eliminates stop and go at cash toll collection plazas, reduces greenhouse gases and improves fuel efficiency. Customers will need a SunPass transponder in order to use the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike. For more information about how to obtain a SunPass please visit www.SunPass.com

Q: What are the Next Steps?

A: The study team is currently gathering socio-cultural, environmental and engineering information necessary to develop the project design alternatives. Once completed, a Public Information Workshop tentatively scheduled for fall of 2009 will be held to display the project alternatives under consideration and their potential social, economic and environmental impacts. Comments received at the workshop will be considered along with the results of the various analyses of this study and will be summarized in project reports that will be available at the Public Hearing tentatively scheduled for summer of 2010. The study is anticipated to be completed by fall of 2010. The construction and design phases of this project are not yet funded.

Q: How Do I Become Involved?

A: Public participation is encouraged during the entire process of the study. The Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise will conduct public meetings that will provide residents, property owners, elected officials, agencies and the public opportunities to share their concerns and suggestions with the study team. All meeting dates, times, and locations are yet to be determined and will be announced through future newsletters, the project website and advertisements in local newspapers. Your questions, comments and participation are very important to us and to the decision making process. You can also contact us directly as well.
