Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike Projects
SR 836 (DOLPHIN EXPRESSWAY) TO EAST OF NORTHWEST 57TH AVE
Project Need
In the last 40 years, Miami-Dade and Broward counties have experienced considerable demographic and economic growth. This has resulted in a significant increase in surface transportation demand. As a result, major highways such as the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike are currently operating at near capacity levels with unacceptable levels of service during the peak periods. The primary purpose for this project is to provide additional capacity to meet existing and future traffic needs and improve safety along this segment of the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike.
This includes evaluating the widening of the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike from eight lanes to ten general purpose lanes for the segment south of I-75 and from four lanes to eight general purpose lanes for the segment north of I-75. These improvements are also needed to enhance the ability of the local emergency management organization to evacuate large portions of South Florida in an acceptable time frame. Without these physical improvements to the corridor, the congestion on the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike due to increased traffic could create undesirable driving conditions for motorists.
