Welcome to the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike widening projects website.

The Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike (SR 821) is a southern extension of Florida's Turnpike, beginning in Florida City (Milepost 1) and ending in Miramar (Milepost 47). It was built in 1974, after the Florida's Turnpike was completed, and is used by both commuters and travelers to the Florida Keys and downtown Miami via SR 836 (Dolphin Expressway).

Today, the Homestead Extension is the most heavily traveled segment of Florida’s Turnpike. In 2008, average daily traffic exceeded 167,000 vehicles at its busiest location. Due to high traffic volumes, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has identified the need to widen along several segments of the roadway. NORTHWEST 170TH STREET INTERCHANGE

Project Development and Environment Study for a potential new interchange at Northwest 170th Street.

SR 836 (DOLPHIN EXPRESSWAY) TO EAST OF NORTHWEST 57TH AVE

Project Development and Environment Study to widen the corridor from SR 836 to east of Northwest 57th Avenue.

SOUTHWEST 184TH ST. (EUREKA DR.) TO SOUTHWEST 88TH ST. (KENDALL DR.)

Design project to widen the corridor from Southwest 184th Street (Eureka Drive) to south of Southwest 88th Street (Kendall Drive).

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has introduced a less expensive version of the SunPass transponder called the “SunPass Mini”. The new, SunPass Mini is a mere 2.5" x 3" and as thin as a credit card. It is easily affixed to your car’s windshield and does not require batteries to work. For more information on SunPass transponders click here (PDF).
