Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike Projects

NORTHWEST 170TH STREET INTERCHANGE

Project Need

The cities of Hialeah and Hialeah Gardens recently annexed a total of 2,600 acres east of the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike that is slated for future development. The proposed interchange will serve future residential, commercial and industrial development planned for this area. The proposed development includes, among others, the Beacon Countyline project.

Because the newly annexed area is bounded by the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike and I-75, there is a limited roadway network that provides access to this area. The City of Hialeah Comprehensive Plan has identified future roadway improvements that will enhance the local roadway network; however, the roadway network is not sufficient to support future traffic from all development envisioned for this area. A new potential interchange at Northwest 170th Street with the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike will provide the capacity and access needed to support future traffic in the area. In addition, the new interchange will improve the hurricane response evacuation time for the surrounding communities and provide a direct access to the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike, a designated emergency evacuation route.
